About Color Blindness

Normal color vision means you have normal photopigments, or color-detecting molecules, that allow you to see a full array of colors. Color blindness or deficiency, means your photopigments are abnormal causing your color perception to be limited and inaccurate.

Normal Color Vision

How does the human eye experience normal color vision? The answer is with special cells in the back of the eye. Those special cells are known as rods and cones. It is cone cells that allow you to have normal color vision. Cones contain photopigment molecules This chemical change triggers electrical signals passed from the retina to the visual parts of the brain. Rod cells are known to process the size, shape, and brightness of visual images versus color.

What Are the Different Types of Cone Cells?

We have three types of cone cells: blue, green, and red. This is why people with normal color vision are known as trichromats. Normal color vision uses all three types of light cones correctly. The center of the macula (fovea) is responsible for the most acute color vision because it contains the highest concentration of cones.

How Can People with Normal Color Vision See Other Colors?

While there are three types of color cones, the cones can sense other colors. But it is the overlap of the cones and how the brain processes the signals sent from them that allows us to see different types of colors.

Deuteranopia Vision

Did you know that you can go through life never knowing that you are color blind? It is only when you take a color blind test, or when you are first learning your colors as a child that color deficiencies are even detected. The most common form is divided into two types: deuteranopia and deuteranomaly. Of color, blindness is red-green color blindness. One form of this is deutan color blindness.

What does the human eye see when it has deutan vision? It is when you can't discern red or green colors very well.

How Does Deutan Vision Work?

Our eyes contain three types of special cells called cones that contain photopigments (known as opsins) that allow us to see in color. These cones are located in the back of the eye. Most of them are found in a place called the fovea. This is located in the center of the macula.

There are three types cones: red, green and blue. With normal color vision, you use all three types of light cones correctly.

If you have deuteranopia, you don't have working green cone cells. That is why is it sometimes called green-blind. It means that you have the green cones present in your eye, but only your red and blue cones function.

If you have deuteranopia, you can only distinguish 2 to 3 different hues. Someone with normal color vision can distinguish 7 hues.

Protanopia Vision

Protan color blindness is a type of red-green color blindness that affects the red cones in your eyes. If you have protan color blindness, you are less sensitive to the color red. If you have protan color blindness, you also have a hard time recognizing blue and green colors.

There are two types of protan color blindness: protanopia and protanomaly.

How Does Protan Vision Work? 

With protanopia, the brightness of the colors red, orange, and yellow are less than someone with normal color vision. Violet, lavender, and purple are indistinguishable from various shades of blue because their reddish components are subdued. For example, a pink flower may just appear to be blue to someone with protanopia.

If you have protanopia, a type of cone cell called L-cones is missing completely. L-cones are long-wavelength cones.

With protanomaly, L-cones are present but defective. With this type of color blindness, there are varying intensities based on the functionality of the cones present.

How Do I Find Out If I Am Color Blind?

Fortunately, you can find out if you are color blind easily and quickly. Your eye doctor can test you using Ishihara color plates. However, there are other ways to test for color blindness. Tritanopia Vision

Did you know that Tritan color blindness is the rarest form of color blindness? It affects the blue cone photopigments in your eye. If you have Tritan color blindness, you confuse blue with green and yellow with violet. Tritan color blindness is also known as blue-yellow color blindness.

There are two types of Tritan color blindness: tritanopia and tritanomaly.

How Does Tritan Vision Work?

With tritanopia, the color blue looks like it is green, and the color yellow looks violet or light gray. It is a form of color blindness that is extremely rare. While most people with this condition inherit this form of color blindness, it is possible to acquire Tritan color blindness over time or even with a head injury.

If you have tritanopia, you are missing a type of cone cell called S-cones. S-cones are short-wavelength cones.

With tritanomaly, S-cones are present, but they are functionally limited. People see blues as greener and the colors yellow and red seem pink. With this type of color blindness, the intensity depends on the functionality of the S-cones.

How Do I Know If I Am Colorblind?

Typically, people who are colorblind have no way of knowing unless they test for it. An eye doctor typically uses a test called the Ishihara test. The test consists of colored plates, aka Ishihara plates, which contain a number among dots, randomized in size and color.
