What is File Transfer Protocol (FTP)?

The FTP, which stands for File Transfer Protocol, is the File Transfer Protocol. As its name suggests, it is a protocol that provides file transfer between two computers connected to the internet and the application given to the application that serves this process. For example, files that are requested to be on a website can be transferred to servers via FTP.

Alternatively, you can send large files to send via email or similar applications to the FTP server with the username and password provided to you. Unlike many alternatives, file transfer is interrupted when there is no internet connection and it resumes when the connection is established.

The expansion of FTP is File Transfer Protocol. It is a protocol developed for transferring files from one computer on the Internet to another. There are many programs for this job. We usually use FTP when uploading our website files to Hosting. There are special programs that allow us to use FTP. It is one of the first developed internet protocols. The computer, where the file transfer is done by FTP, is connected online and files are transferred between the computers with various commands.

Necessary things to be able to transfer files with a computer via FTP;

Having an FTP service program (FTP Server) on the computer to be connected.

The IP address of the other computer,

Port number opened for connection if any

Name and password of the user whose files we want to reach

When these conditions are met, the FTP connection can be made.

FTP connection can be made using a hostname or ip number. I mentioned the requirements above. After the requirements are met, the necessary operations can be performed with the commands. General usage is the FTP <address of the machine to be ftp>.

When connected to the computer, you are asked for the user name and password. If the information is entered correctly, it will be connected to that user's computer. This connection can be provided in two ways. First of all, we can do it with some programs that we can perform FTP operations. The other way is by opening a folder, typing the FTP connection ip and port into the folder address bar, pressing the entry and typing in the username and password.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is an internet protocol developed to transfer files from one Internet-connected computer to another (in both directions) and the general name given to the application programs that do this job. It is one of the first developed internet protocols.

While transferring files from another computer to another computer with FTP protocol, an interactive-on-line connection is established with that computer and the file import/export operations are made between the two computers with the help of a series of commands provided by the protocol.
